Meet me tonight, somewhere I don’t have to hide Somewhere that I feel safe inside Somewhere like Celestial City Meet me tonight, in some place that I’m not known A hundred miles from my home town Somewhere like, Celestial City I won’t be coming back This time I’m gone I don’t even know about the damage done Meet me tonight Somewhere high above these dirt clouds Somewhere that there’s no poison rain falling down Somewhere like Celestial City I won’t be calling back This time I’m gone I don’t even know about the damage done So meet me tonight I just want to see you and you alone There’s no place left there, there’s no place that we can go now No place but Celestial City No place but Celestial City There’s no place that we can go but Celestial City

He kissed her mouth, cracked her head Until her eyes fell open And all the things he never said Were better left unspoken It’s not liked it used to be when she was seven Her mothers’ love, and her fathers’ knee And then she’d climb the wooden hill to heaven I’ll climb that wooden hill Now at night when she cant sleep She has to leave the light on The noise below in the city streets Electricity pylons She never came to any harm when she was eleven Her sisters’ coat and her brothers’ arm And they’d sleep beside the wooden hill to heaven I’ll climb that wooden hill A spider crawled into her sleeping mouth Choked the life blood from her veins When she awoke the spider had gone and a woman's shell was all that remained... where once had slept great beauty. Later on at 39 She wonders how she found the time To sleep and dream of bigger plans Then they were crushed by a smaller man It’’s not like it used to be, her strength is failing What is gone is gone for good and the wooden hill becomes too steep for scaling I’ll climb that wooden hill

She's only six feet away, right across the aisle If I could see beyond here boyfriend I’d flash my winning smile And I might be the older man full of confidence and charm But I would turn her world around if I could get her in my arms I’m a decent man, I do the decent thing When I can......and I can, yes I can I’m a decent man, I do the decent thing When I can......and I can, yes I can She’s maybe only 22, but I would show her what to do I guide her through the back streets of my tiny mind And she would thank me when I’m older, no longer shy, a little bolder And all of those who followed me, they’d owe me a debt in time I’m a decent man, I do the decent thing When I can......and I can, yes I can I’m a decent man, I do the decent thing When I can......and I can, yes I can And if I cant then I wont weep I’ll be indecent in my sleep I’m disgusting, I’m pathetic, I’ll do things you’d never believe I’m always looking at you when you can’t see me I’m 45, no I’m 28, O.K. I’m really 33 But age is not important, what I crave is purity. I’m a decent man, I do the decent thing When I can......and I can, yes I can I’m a decent man, I do the decent thing When I can......and I can, yes I can And if I can’t then I’m not blind I’ll be indecent in my mind

You and I speak the mother tongue We don't know where, Daddy’s gone Where he’s gone, or where he’s been Or if we’ll see him again He didn’t hate you, he just ignored you I will describe his face for you His face, for you, is ashen grey Afraid of what you’ll say Oh Daddy are you coming home? Oh Daddy are you coming home? Are you coming home? He loved us once, he loves us now You must hold onto this truth somehow Sometimes it fades, and I can’t recall The time he loved us all And every time the phone rings, there’s a chance he could be calling To tell us that he’s sorry and he was wrong for leaving And I want so much to tell him That we would all forgive him if he just came home....... Oh Daddy are you coming home? Oh Daddy are you coming home? Are you coming home? I don’t have faith in this world We are just another boy and girl A boy and girl on a single spree And it’s the mothers tongue we feel Oh Daddy are you coming home? Oh Daddy are you coming home? Are you coming home? Are you coming home? Are you coming home?

From my window, I can see the clouds across the ocean They are clear and still, surrounded by the blue As these Airfix wings, tilt back towards the sky-line I dream of being, where I’ve always been, alone, up here, with you. Come on now, let me show you around High days and holy days are all that’s in this town Come on girl I will show you my world, and I will be there From this window, I can see the fields are slowly sinking They are brown and grey, where once they shone with green As these clattering cars take me to where I’m going I play out the scene, where you’ll always be, alone out here with me Come on now, let me show you around High days and holy days are all that’s in this town As we roll by a little piece of blue sky starts me crying From this window, I can see these towns are slowly dying They are black and brown, drowning in the gloom And as I race through, another thousand faceless places I start to dream, that I’ll never be, as far again from you Come on now, let me show you around High days and holy days are all that’s in this town Come on girl I will show you my world, and I will be there

I need a little place where I can go You don’t move fast, you just talk slow A need a little money and a place to sleep The backyard of my mind, The backyard of my mind Well I’ve got me a home but it’s way too small The kids and the dogs they fight and bawl So I’m gonna find a place that I can call The backyard of my mind, The backyard of my mind It’s a hundred above, it’s 40 below, it’s hotter than hell in Mexico You sleep in the day then you ‘re awake all night In the backyard of my mind, The backyard of my mind I’m shaving with a razor that’s five weeks old The taps are broken and the waters cold Still I’m smelling pretty good in my cheap cologne In the backyard of my mind, The backyard of my mind I left the sun in the north and met the rains down south As the lightning flashed I burned my mouth Still I keep on driving down as the thunder clouds roll The destination is my mind, the backyard of my mind There’s a black sky ahead, it’s blinking at me It makes trees look greener than trees should be When I left home it was way past nine I’ve lost all sense of time, In the backyard of my mind So I need a little place where I can go You don’t move fast, you just talk slow A need a little money and a place to sleep The backyard of my mind, The backyard of my mind I’m in the backyard of my mind, The backyard of my mind

When you leave, when you leave the spotlight Take good care, not to leave alone I’ll take your hand and lead you to the stage side Until you see that wan light that bathes you in it’s glow But the house is empty and the stage is bear There’s no one here to see you, they don’t care When you leave, When you leave the spotlight And step into the daylight, you will find me there When you leave, When you leave the spotlight Step into the daylight You will find I’ll save you there I’ve seen them all, disciples and believers The rise and fall, The Wailers and the Grievers It’s not your time, it’s your time no longer There is always someone stronger, to take your crown away But your still singing on a stage somewhere There’s no one here to see you, they don’t care When you leave, When you leave the spotlight And step into the daylight, you will find me there When you leave, (baby, baby) When you leave the spotlight Step into the daylight You will find I’ll save you there It’s a light of glory, that illuminates your prayers It’s a light that’s only shining when you’re there When you leave, When you leave the spotlight Step into the daylight, you will find me there When you leave, (baby, baby) When you leave the spotlight Step into the daylight You will find I’ll save you there

From the blackened finger papers To the magazines of shame Where art is just a rumour In the meat market of fame I have stood up to be counted but my numbers been denied I am always the bridesmaid, never the bride. The bride will be resplendent On her glorious day of days While the bridesmaids drunk and weeping Leaping for that blessed bouquet Well I have wept and drunk too but the flowers I caught had died I am always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Shall I tell you how it really is In this life amongst the star There are those who’ll rob and kill you And return you to the bars But a worse fate is waiting For those the critics don't deride Who are loved by just a handful who make them feel alive Go on admit it now that truth from which you’ve shied You are too scared to quit now because of your fucking pride You are always the bridesmaid, never the bride Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

A mile from my house I took a wrong turning The sky it was blue then the next it was burning I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine... From tarmac to gravel, from gravel to cinders I burned all my bridges and broke all my fingers I can’t believe that some things last forever I cant believe that I wont walk this way again I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine... What’s closest to home can sometimes surprise you You look forward so hard you don’t see what’s beside you I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine... 12 months in a year, 10 years in decade That’s how long it took before I knew I was betrayed I can’t believe that some things last forever I cant believe that I wont walk away again I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine.... Where my son doesn’t lie, where this girl doesn’t cry Where the sound of the door is not the sound of goodbye Where the ring of the bell brings a tear to your eye, Still I’ll walk away again I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine.. Lost and alone I staggered in the green woods Dragging me down, then pulling me skywards Up above the clouds I was flying In no time at all though I’m back down to earth again I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine... I took a ride where the stars they don’t shine...

BLUE RED AND GREY (Pete Townshend) Some people seem so obsessed with the morning Get up early just to see the sun rise Some people like it more when there's fire in the sky Worship the sun when it's high Some people go for those sultry evenings Sipping cocktails in the blue, red and grey But I like every minute of the day I like every second, so long as you are on my mind Every moment has its special charm It's alright when you're around, rain or shine I know a crowd who only live after midnight Their faces always seem so pale And then there's friends of mine who must have sunlight They say a suntan never fails I know a man who works the night shift He's lucky to get a job and some pay And I like every minute of the day I dig every second I can laugh in the snow and rain I get a buzz from being cold and wet The pleasure seems to balance out the pain And so you see that I'm completely crazy I even shun the south of France The people on the hill, they say I'm lazy But when they sleep, I sing and dance Some people have to have the sutlry evenings Cocktails in the blue, red and grey But I like every minute of the day I like every minute of the day

about

Released May 2003 ‘A Decent Man’ proved to be a further step away from the world of alt. country and was widely hailed as his finest album, mixing pop, folk, soul and country.

Produced by Jackie Leven, it featured nine new MWK songs, plus covers of Neil Youngs' 'Love In Mind' and 'Blue, Red & Grey' by Pete Townshend.

“A guitar album of exquisite beauty and fine country-flavoured pop. His strongest work to date.”
– Daily Express

His finest album yet, whose appeal unfurls with each play. The sound of a man who has distilled everything from his colourful career into a solid block of songs that resonate with assuredness, energy and depth.
- Comes With A Smile

A Decent Man is packed with good songs……romantic, a touch jaded, convincing.
- Mojo ****4 /5

Celestial City is a fuckin’ great song.
- Peter Case

There is intelligence and a sense of humour at work here that reminds us what a great songwriter MWK is. A Decent Man is a wonderfully adult riposte to all the banal drivel that constitutes the charts these days. Tie up the kids and make them listen!
- Hi Fi ********* 9/10

A Decent Man is a truly remarkable piece of work, the production is wonderfully inventive. Anything but “another singer-songwrter album”
- 3rd Coast Music, Texas ****4/ 5

He’s quietly knocked out another masterpiece. A tantalizingly fine album, his third classic in a row.
- Whisperin’ and Hollerin’ *********9/10

Tales of small town importance and big city loneliness, self-delusion and riveting honesty. A resonant and vivid album.
- Logo

A hugely accomplished album. His strongest work to date.
- Americana-UK.com ****4/5
