The Wooden Hill

from A Decent Man by Michael Weston King

/

lyrics

He kissed her mouth,
cracked her head
Until her eyes fell open
And all the things
he never said
Were better left unspoken

It’s not liked it used to be
when she was seven
Her mothers’ love,
and her fathers’ knee
And then she’d climb
the wooden hill to heaven I’ll climb that wooden hill

Now at night
when she cant sleep
She has to leave the light on
The noise below
in the city streets
Electricity pylons

She never came to any harm
when she was eleven
Her sisters’ coat
and her brothers’ arm
And they’d sleep beside
the wooden hill to heaven I’ll climb that wooden hill

A spider crawled
into her sleeping mouth
Choked the life blood
from her veins
When she awoke
the spider had gone
and a woman's shell
was all that remained...
where once had slept
great beauty.

Later on at 39
She wonders how she found the time
To sleep and dream of bigger plans
Then they were crushed by a smaller man

It’’s not like it used to be,
her strength is failing
What is gone
is gone for good
and the wooden hill
becomes too steep for scaling I’ll climb that wooden hill
